Disabled people are twice as likely to be
unemployed as non-disabled people, yet most can work and want to work. Disabled people often face enormous barriers to finding employment: prejudice, lack of access to training, and poverty. A job not only provides an income but an opportunity for greater independence and self-worth. To help break down the barriers to employment faced by people with disabilities, Shaw Trust helps individuals and employers to focus on what disabled people can do rather than what they cannot. Disability can affect anyone: . It is estimated that 7 million people in the UK are inured in accidents each year . 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life . There are 1.5 million children with special needs in the UK |
THE ROUTE TO WORK Shaw
Trust is the UK’s leading national charity enabling 10,000 disabled
people to find routes to work each year. This route is different for
each individual. For those who have had an illness or acquired a
disability there may be a need to change careers and retrain. For
others, it may be a case of updating existing skills to match the
requirements of the modern work place.
