Shaw Trust

‘Shaw Trust has changed my life – I thought I had no future’

Shaw Trust Disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people, yet most can work and want to work.

Disabled people often face enormous barriers to finding employment: prejudice, lack of access to training, and poverty. A job not only provides an income but an opportunity for greater independence and self-worth.

To help break down the barriers to employment faced by people with disabilities, Shaw Trust helps individuals and employers to focus on what disabled people can do rather than what they cannot.

Disability can affect anyone:
.   It is estimated that 7 million people in the UK are inured in accidents each year
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life
There are 1.5 million children with special needs in the UK

THE ROUTE TO WORK

Shaw Trust is the UK’s leading national charity enabling 10,000 disabled people to find routes to work each year. This route is different for each individual. For those who have had an illness or acquired a disability there may be a need to change careers and retrain. For others, it may be a case of updating existing skills to match the requirements of the modern work place.

Advice: counselling and advice enables an individual to identify a route to improve their skills and employment opportunities.

Training: ranging from recognised vocational qualifications, to life skills, social skills and independent living skills.

Work Preparation: help with identifying different employment options, preparing CVs, interview techniques, etc.

Work Placements: enabling individuals to learn new skills and gain the experience needed to secure permanent work.

Social Enterprises: These local projects operate as professional businesses, using their income for rehabilitation and training. They provide employment for people with disabilities in a supported environment and range from catering and horticulture initiatives to business administration and printing firms.
